New Server Build
Our new virtual machine host.
With a new project coming soon (details next month) we're in need of a more robust application server with a strong lean towards virtualization, running ESXi 5.
At our base, we're using a Asus KFSN5-D/IST which uses the NVIDIA nForce Professional 3600 chipset. The board also has a lot of CPU support for an upgrade path.
Our processors will be 2 quad-core AMD 2344-HE's Barcelona 1.7GHz, because they draw only 55w and will be easy to cool.
For memory, we're going to be using 16GB of Kingston Registered PC2 6400.
The power supply will be a Silencer Mk II 650W a very quiet, efficient, and dependable power supply.
With everything we do, we like to be as efficient as possible, using less power, producing less heat. That's why we decided to go with a XCLIO Windtunnel for our chassis. Its a Full Tower case with two large 10" (25cm) silent fans on the side which will move enough CFM for the heat sinks.
The heat sinks we'll be using are Thermalright HR-01-X. Two very large [L110 x W60 x H159.5(mm)] passive cooling blocks.
As for storage, we've always had good experience with Hitachi, and we went with 8 2TB Deskstar 5K3000.
We've decided to go Raid 6 with a LSI 9260-8i including the BBU.
Updates
Oct 19, 2011 - Finished!
It's finally built, and chugging along smoothly, this and many other sites hosted in VM's on ESXi.
Oct 5, 2011 - More Parts
Unfortunately our plan for minimal-setup was too short. We've ordered another 8GB of memory and an LSI 9260-8i raid controller.
Sep 19, 2011 - Parts have been ordered.
All of the parts for the new build have been ordered and will be shipping sometime this week.
